Purbeck Random Walling
The
most economic and traditional way to build a natural stone wall is to
use random walling. It is used mainly in and around the garden for boundary
walls, planters, and retaining walls. A retaining wall is faced on one
side only, and is normally backed up with soil. A free-standing wall is
faced on both sides, and therefore twice as much stone is required. The
stone (which is sold by the tonne) can be laid dry or in mortar, and coverage
for a single sided wall is approximately 3m2 per tonne. Stones are generally
50mm - 100mm high and a handleable size on plan. Material is supplied
loose tipped.
Cropped Facing Stone - "The material for house building"
A Cropped Facing
stone is guillotined to a regular bed size (100mm - 150mm). This means
that it can be used as a facing to blockwork, or for it's primary use
in cavity construction.
The stones are normally between 50mm and 175mm high, and in random lengths.
They can also be selected to be at the lower or higher end of the size
scale. Blue/grey stones can also be included if required. Material is
supplied loose tipped, and is sold by the tonne. Coverage is approximately
4m2 per tonne.
